While there is a science to the distillation of essential oils, it is also an art. Distillers not only rely on years of experience, they also employ modern technologies and techniques.
The most common method of extracting essential oils is a low-heat steam distillation process. In this process, pressurised steam is circulated through plant material. The essential oils are liberated from the plant and carried away by the steam. When the steam cools, the water and oils naturally separate and the oil is collected. To ensure the highest quality oil extract with the correct chemical composition, the temperature and pressure must be closely monitored. Too little heat or pressure and the oil will not release; too much, and the oil’s composition and potency will be affected.

Purity & Potency
You're entering one of the least regulated industries in the world. And so, I advocate for these oils because we (doTERRA) have the most stringent testing protocol in the world, and have set the industry standard for the best unadulterated, pure, powerful, potent and therapeutic essential oils.
Experts estimate that 80% of commercially available “pure” essential oils are adulterated in some way. And, as a consumer, unless you are asking for full testing results, you have no way of knowing what's in that bottle.
We are different.
7 different types of testing are done on EVERY batch of essential oils: Gas Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, microbial, organoleptic, FTIR (fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), chirality, isotopic and heavy metal testing.
Not just that, we also test at multiple points in the extraction and distillation process and we use an independent third party research lab to test every batch. We give every customer access to those test results when they purchase their oils.
We work closely with APRC (our 3rd party testing lab) to ensure every single bottle that lands on your doorstep, is as pure, potent and therapeutic as possible.

Native Sourcing
The simple and more cost effective thing to do when it comes to sourcing oils, would be to grow our own oils at home-based plantations, owning the farms and bulk producing the plants. But that's not what we're about. Essential oils go way beyond ease and profit margins.
So, why do we go to over 40 different countries to source our beautiful oils? Why not just stay at home base?
Because where the plant natively thrives and grows is important. We know, through testing (and our own experiences) that natively sourced oils have a more complete constituent profile with more profound therapeutic effects. So ye, honey, its SO important.

Their families have quite often, worked that land for generations.
